At least 64 civilians were killed in a law enforcement action cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.

Four security agents were among those killed during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. More than 80 individuals were arrested.

Fierce clashes commenced when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with armed resistance, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "shocked" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas close to Rio's airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Government representatives stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the raid started.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.

Local law enforcement stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the operation, together with multiple guns.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are thought to be members of a faction from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.
